Bobby

Robert F. Kennedy announces death of Martin Luther King Jr.

Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated two months later.

That was greatness.  Listen and see if you can feel the compassion in his voice.  Then you may have an inkling of what we lost in 1968.

I went from my home in Connecticut to New York on a pilgrimage to St. Patricks.  We waited and shuffled for hours in line just to have perhaps 60 seconds in his presence.

Those days.  That year, are forever etched in my mind and act as a reference point for life.  There was life before 1968 and life after 1968.  Nothing was the same.  Nothing would ever be the same again.

1968.  The year that changed everything.

The year innocence was lost.

Re: Bobby (2.00 / 1)

Thanks.

Joe Scarborough showed a video of that speech in his show.  Said that Bobby has been warned not to go to his campaign event that night.  People were carrying guns.  Emotions were high.  But he went.  And he spoke.

That takes tremendous courage.  That separates the real heros from the rest.

I have yet to see what [Obama] has done to take the highest office in the land. He is no Martin Luther King. --Helen Thomas

Re: Bobby (2.00 / 3)

Thanks, Hampster.  I know that Hillary cherishes the life and memory of Bobby, what he stood for and stood up for. In a way they strike me as soul mates. I imagine that's why his son endorsed her.

Re: Bobby (none / 0)

NewHampster- Thank You so much for posting this- I think this country needs to hear these words and now!
this includes you who support Sen. Obama. Now this was a speech on race. So beautifully spoken and heart felt- which is why I support Hillary- and no wonder she had him on her mind- it's his words that were probably on her mind-and in her heart.

Re: Bobby (none / 0)

Thank you for the wonderful, but heartbreaking video.

I believe that night was the only time he publicly addressed his brother's assassination.

That poor family has had to learn to keep their grief private. It speaks to the emotions of that sad night in American history that he referenced it.

He was so inspiring, especially to young people!
Inspirational speakers used to be a good thing, back in the day.

Re: Bobby (2.00 / 1)

You are right, as I wrote, he was dying the night of my college graduation.  I had worked for his campaign.  I loved him and what he meant to this country.

I think one of the lessons that can be learned from that year is how hatred just kills.  We need to tone down the rhetoric in this campaign on both sides.  I'm feeling like I don't want to go out and vote anymore, for anyone, the rage and arrogance of both candidates supporters seems to be reaching new heights and it scares and repulses me.
